Principal's Message

Welcome to a brand-new school year at Stone Creek Elementary! Whether you are returning or joining us for the first time, we are excited to have you as part of our school community. Our building is filled with energy and a shared commitment to making each child’s experience meaningful.

We proudly serve approximately 450 students from Early Childhood Special Education through 5th grade, supported by a dedicated team of 65 staff members. Our crew works hard every day to put students first—creating environments where kids feel safe, supported, and inspired to take flight.

As we move into the 2026–2027 school year, we will continue to focus on what matters: achieving academic growth, promoting strong attendance, and elevating student and family voice. In addition, our district is sharpening its focus in three key areas:

  • Writing every day across all grade levels
  • Clear and consistent communication through ParentSquare
  • Showing kindness in all ways, every day

Kindness isn’t just something we talk about—it’s something we expect, model, and celebrate. I challenge our students and families to be intentional about showing kindness and to share your experiences with us throughout the year. When we work together, we build a stronger, more connected school community.

At Stone Creek, learning extends beyond the classroom. Students participate in Music, PE, STEAM, and Explore classes, along with daily recess and lunch times that allow for both movement and social connection. We also provide additional support in reading, math, and specialized services based on student needs to ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed.

Family partnership remains a cornerstone of our work. Whether it’s volunteering, joining PTO, attending events, or simply staying connected through ParentSquare, your involvement makes a difference. We will continue to reach out with opportunities to engage—because it truly takes all of us working together to create the best experience for our students.

It is an honor to serve as your principal. I am committed to ensuring your child feels valued, supported, and challenged each day they walk through our doors. Safety will always remain a top priority, and my door is always open.

A Little About Me

I attended Fort Hays State University and graduated from Wichita State University. I earned my Masters from Baker University and completed my district level certification from Pitt State University.

I have worked in the Derby school district as a Building Principal since 2013. Prior to working in Derby, I was the principal in USD 396 Douglass for five years. I have two boys, Treyton and Tate. They attended Derby schools and are now off to college, Logan University and Friends University, respectively.

As a building leader, I enjoy working with staff members and parents to hear how we can improve our system. I believe that through shared partnerships, we can team up to help students meet their potential. I encourage you to come be a part of our school community by volunteering, joining PTO, collaborating on a strategic planning committee, or working within our district!

During the school year, we will reach out about needs. Sometimes it’s as simple as sending in recyclables, while other times we need career presenters, judges or field trip chaperones. It takes a small village to make all our lessons engaging, impactful, and complete!

I promise to serve your child(ren) while they are in our care. Safety will remain a top priority in all areas. If you have any questions, please reach out by email at srusher@usd260.com or by phone at (316) 788-8555.
